Setting Up the SVG File in Cricut Design Space

Cricut Design Space set up of the mini monstera plant.

The setup for this SVG file is straightforward. You might want to add more plant leaves, and you’re welcome to do that. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Ungroup Everything: Start by ungrouping all the elements.
  2. Prepare Your Planter: Go to your planter and change the black center to “score.”
  3. Attach the Base and Score Lines: Attach the base and the score lines together.
  4. Send to be cut: I used the medium cardstock setting.

For Silhouette Studio, you will do the same set up! Make sure to change the center to a score line!

You can resize the project if you prefer a different size, but I found the current size works well. When you're ready to cut, you can arrange the leaves to fit on one sheet of 12x12 cardstock by moving them down at an angle.

Assembly Instructions

Cutting and Assembling the Planter

Step-by-step assembly of the paper planter.
  1. Fold the Planter: Fold in on all the score lines. There are two flaps on one side to attach on the inside of the planter. Fold all four sides in.
  2. Use Tools if Needed: You can use a bone tool to fold or just your fingers. No special tools are necessary, but investing in a scoring tool for your Cricut or Silhouette is beneficial if you enjoy paper projects.
  3. Glue the sides: I used craft glue to glue the side panels together.

Assembling the Inside of the Planter

Creating the cross section inside the planter.
  1. Prepare the Inside Pieces: Measure and fold the pieces that will support your plant leaves inside the planter. No need for perfect folds as these won't be seen.
  2. Create a Cross Section: Use hot glue to place the pieces in a cross (or hashtag) formation inside the planter. Start with two pieces going one way, then add the other two pieces on top going the opposite direction.

Adding the Plant Leaves

Bending the leaves to create a natural curve.
  1. Bend the Leaves: Slightly bend the plant leaves over your finger to give them a natural curve. Avoid folding them in half.
  2. Attach the Leaves: Start attaching the leaves and stems to the bars inside the planter using hot glue. Go around in a loop, alternating the direction and type of leaves (with and without holes) for variety.

Final Touches

  1. Adjust the Leaves: Fiddle with the placement to ensure some leaves stick up while others bend down for a fuller look.
  2. Customize: Feel free to cut more leaves or use different colors and textures to make the plant uniquely yours.
