Carefully cut around the edges of the animals. Older kids might enjoy handling the cutting themselves, while younger children might need a little help. Also, cut out the card template provided.

Create the Card Base:

Use construction paper or cardstock to cut out the heart shape. You can use the heart template included in the download for a perfect cutout or cut your own. To use my template simply tape onto a piece of cardstock or construction paper and then cut around the edge.

Assemble the Card:

Glue the colored animal template onto the front of the card cutout. Then if you would like add heart stickers, pom poms, or scrapbook paper for extra flair.

Write a Valentineโ€™s Message:

Use a permanent marker to write a sweet message inside the card. A simple โ€œHappy Valentineโ€™s Dayโ€ or โ€œYouโ€™re the Bestโ€ works great, but kids can get creative with their words!

This version of the craft project is a fun idea for kids of all ages and a good idea for last-minute Valentineโ€™s Day crafts. Itโ€™s also a clever idea to keep little ones engaged while enhancing their fine motor skills.

Layered Valentine SVG Cards for Cutting Machines

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

Download the Free Valentine’s Card SVG Files:

Start by downloading the free layered SVG templates for the unicorn, dinosaur, and bunny designs. You can find the free downloads here in my community vault. To get the password simply sign up for my newsletter below and the welcome email will send within 5-10 minutes. The 3 Free Valentine’s Day SVG Files will be in a zip file together! Upload to Your Cutting Machine Software:

Open your cutting machine software (e.g., Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio) and then upload the SVG files. Resize if necessary to fit your blank card base. I made mine to a width of 11.5 so that I could max out a piece of 12×12 paper and make the card as big as possible. Make sure to resize the whole file to fit properly.

Cut the Pieces:

Use cardstock in your desired colors to cut out all the layers. I cut mine with the medium cardstock setting. For example, you might use red paper for the heart and pastel colors for the animals, it’s totally up to you!

Assemble the Layers:

Then, glue each layer in place using craft glue. I placed my pieces into little bins to keep them in order. I also used a low tack transfer tape for some of my pieces to keep them in place.

Attach to the Card Base:

Once all the layers are assembled, secure the completed design to the front of the card cutout using foam tape for a 3D effect or with glue.

Personalize with a Sweet Message:

Write a personalized Valentineโ€™s message inside the card using a marker or pen. Alternatively, you could use your Cricut pens/pen adapter to add your message in for your before assembly. You can also add embellishments like heart stickers for extra charm.

These handmade cards make the perfect way to create a special keepsake for loved ones. The layered design adds a touch of sophistication, while still being simple enough to craft with kids.
