Step 1: Setting Up Your Canvas

How to set up your canvas and mat in Silhouette Studio for print then cut stickers.
  1. Select Your Machine: Go to the top menu on the right and select your Silhouette Machine.
  2. Select your mat size – I am using a 12 x 12 mat
  3. Set Media Size: Change your media size to ‘Letter’ (8.5×11 inches). This ensures your design fits standard printer paper.
  4. Page Setup and Registration Marks: Turn on registration marks by navigating to ‘Page Setup’ and selecting ‘Registration Marks’. This is crucial for aligning your print and cut accurately. If this isn’t turned on when you print, your machine is going to have no way of knowing where to cut. You can adjust the size of your registration marks here as well giving you a bigger print area.

Step 2: Creating the Sticker Design

Begin by opening Silhouette Studio. If you don’t have your own designs, websites like Creative Fabrica offer a plethora of commercial-use images and designs. Here, we’re using Minecraft images for personal use.

Setting up an offset on my stickers.
  1. Remove Backgrounds: If needed, use a tool like Kittle to remove backgrounds from your images.
  2. Resize and Arrange: Place your images on the page, ensuring they fit within the printable area. Your sticker size is completely up to you, I definitely made smaller stickers here. I feel like my uusual size is around 1.5-3 inches.
  3. Add Offset: Use the ‘Offset’ tool to create a slight white border around each design. This helps in making die-cut stickers with a clean edge. Now, for your own design you can add a color for the background. These are your stickers so I leave it up to you. We all have different ways of designing, I added on a green offset for the name stickers I made.
  4. Individual Stickers: Ensure no designs are overlapping by adjusting offsets and positions. Use the ‘Node’ tool to fine-tune cut lines. Nodes are markings of where the blade should cut. Since Silhouette studio is a full design software you can adjust everything. If you are in node mode, you can hold shift and drag over nodes and delete to remove any holes that might be cute in your stickers. It’s a good idea to play around with Silhouette studio and learn from mistakes! That’s how I do it…

Step 3: Preparing for Print and Cut

Before printing, double-check your design setup. Make sure nothing is over the lines and you are ready to go.

Print settings for printable sticker paper.
  1. Printer Settings: Go to ‘File’ > ‘Print’ and choose your inkjet printer. Depending on your printer, it may be labeled differently but I always choose the high quality print setting.
  2. Print the Design: Print your design onto the printable sticker paper. Make sure the registration marks are printed correctly.

Step 4: Applying the Holographic Overlay

The holographic effect is what makes these stickers stand out. I like using a laminate because this helps “waterproof” the paper. Now, they aren’t going to last forever but having any laminate on your regular stickers is going to help!

Applying the holographic laminate over the sticker paper.
  1. Measure and Cut: Measure your holographic overlay to cover the entire sticker sheet, including a slight overlap for the registration marks.
  2. Cut Out Registration Mark Areas: Using a pen, mark and cut out the areas where the registration marks are to avoid covering them. I use my scissors to cut away the corners and the black square.
  3. Apply the Overlay: Peel back a small section of the backing and align it with the sticker sheet. Use a squeegee or ruler wrapped in a towel to smooth it out, preventing bubbles as you go.

Step 5: Cutting the Stickers

Now it’s time to cut your stickers using your Silhouette machine.

  1. Load the Mat: Place the sticker sheet onto the cutting mat, ensuring it’s well-adhered and in the proper corner
  2. Cut Settings: In Silhouette Studio, go to ‘Send’. Adjust the cut settings to ‘Sticker Paper’. For holographic material, I set the blade depth to 5 and increase the passes to 3. Your cut settings might be different cut settings than I use. I use the line setting in Studio so that only the outside of my stickers (the offset) is being cut. You may need to go back to your design and adjust the files.
  3. Test Cut: Always do a test cut to ensure your settings are correct.
  4. Send to be cut!

Step 6: Finalizing the Stickers

Once the cutting is complete, carefully peel away the excess material. Slowly peel the sickers off the mat, my mat was extra sticky and thats the best way to lose your backing. Take your time here so you have beautiful perfect stickers.

Tips for Perfect Stickers

  • Test Different Materials: Experiment with different types of paper, like holographic vinyl sheets or holographic sticker material, to find what works best for you.
  • Adjust Printer Settings: Different printers may require different settings. Adjust your printer settings to get the best print quality.
  • High-Quality Images: Use high-quality images and designs to ensure vibrant colors and sharp details. Try Creative Fabrica for commercial use images that you can sell!
  • Prevent Bubbles: Use a squeegee or similar tool to apply the holographic overlay smoothly, avoiding air bubbles. I like to use something with a sponge material or a towel to prevent scratches on my holographic laminate.
  • You can visit your local craft stores to grab materials or shop online – I have found some really unique sticker materials over the past year.

If you plan to sell your stickers, remember to avoid trademarked images unless you have the rights to use them. Platforms like Etsy are great for selling custom stickers, but be sure to check their guidelines on intellectual property. I only mention this out of finding out the hard way myself…
