Materials Needed for the Project
To get started on your 3D guitar box, you’ll need to gather a few materials. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Cricut machine or Silhouette: Make sure your machine is in good working condition and connected to your computer.
- Cardstock: Choose a sturdy cardstock in the colors of your choice. I used an 80 lb weight and textured!
- Adhesive: I use both craft glue and hot glue.
- Scissors or a cutting tool: this is only for the strings! My preferred scissors are non-stick which you can find here.
- Fishing Line or string: You want a thinner thread for the guitar strings
Downloading the 3D Guitar SVG File
The free 3D SVG File will contain the box portion but you can delete this in Cricut Design Space if you would like!! This free SVG download will be in my community vault towards at the bottom (I am working to get my SVGs numbered so please be patient!) – you can learn how to download here for desktop and here for iPad/iPhone. Please remember to sign up for my newsletter below to grab the password to the vault.
Preparing the File for Cutting in Cricut Design Space
This SVG only has one thing to be changed. It is sized to fit on 12×12 paper so make any adjustments that you need. Make sure to resize the entire file so that the pieces still fit. Then ungroup the whole file. You will need to change the single line to a score line (delete this if you don’t have a scoring stylist or use a light colored marker or even a pencil). Then attach it back to the black piece. This is to give you a guide on where to place the strings.
Once you have this sized, any color changes made, or any personalization done – you can send to your Cricut to cut. I always cut my cardstock crafts out on the medium cardstock setting on fast mode. However, these settings depend on your machine and your blade.
Note: I cut my guitar next three times to make it thicker – I am using 80 lb card but if you have 100 or more than use that! You want it to be stiff and not sag.
Assembling the 3D Guitar Box
Step 1: Start with the body and adding the detailed pieces to get this out of the way.
Step 2: Assemble the neck and the tuning pieces.
Step 3: Assemble the bridge – this is a 3D piece so glue the tabs/flaps to the inside of the trapezoid piece. Glue this piece with the small side facing the bottom and about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from the hole (this will depend on the size of your box).
Step 4: Assemble the tuning keys – these are 3D cylinders that I used a combo of craft glue and hot glue.
Step 5: Cut the fishing line and hot glue these to the bridge. Tip: Try to use minimal hot glue – you don’t want gobs of glue sticking up.
Step 6: Glue the tuning keys down on the top of the neck – work from the outside in and bottom to top to attach the strings. You will grab the outside string and bring it up to the top, add hot glue to the side of the glued down cylinder, loop it around the glue and allow it to dry.
Tip: pull the string tight but not too tight where the paper starts to bend up and curve.
Go outside pieces to the bottom cylinders, next over to the middle cylinders, and two middle strings to the top cylinders.
Step 7: Glue the detail piece in between the tuning pieces.
Step 8: Assemble the Box – fold on the perforation lines and glue the four flaps to the inside of the box
Step 9: Attach the guitar pieces to the box
