Cricut Design Space Tutorial
Step 1: Text
Grab two text boxes and write the big word (background word) in one and what you want the knockout to be in the other one.
I like to do one in type font and one in a script font – I think the script font looks nice as the knockout words.
Step 2: Offset
I am so happy Cricut Design Space now offers the offset feature to both iPad users and desktop users.
I created an offset around my knockout text of .2 and kept it rounded. Use your discretion on the size of the offset.
Step 3: Center
Use the align function to center all of the text – resize if needed!
Step 4: Slice
Slice only the offset and the back word! You will then delete all the sliced items leaving only the background image with the hole and the words we wanted for the knock out.
Step 5: Change colors and make!
Change any colors you would like or weld together or attach to have it cut in one image. These are so fast to make!
Inkscape Tutorial
This is super similar to the Cricut Design Space tutorial – the steps are practically the same!
Step 1: Text
Grab two text boxes and write the big word (background word) in one and what you want the knockout to be in the other one.
I like to do one in type font and one in a script font – I think the script font looks nice as the knockout words.
Make sure to change the text to paths – select the text box and go to Path & then select object to path.
This will make each letter a path which means it can be uploaded and cut in Cricut Design Space.
Next grab the letters or phrases that go together and go back to path and hit union – this makes them one piece.
Step 2: Outset
First I duplicated my knockout text.
Then, I created an outset around my knockout text by going to path and then outset. I did this around 4-5 times to create a good amount of space.
If there are any small holes in your text you can change to nodes and delete.
Step 3: Center
Use the align function to center all of the text – resize if needed! You can use control while resizing to keep the resize uniform! Make sure if you resize that you keep the offset and knockout text uniform!
Step 4: Difference
Grab the back word and only the outset then we head back to path and do difference! This will delete the knockout from the back words! Make sure the knock out is layered on top of the back words or the difference could end up backwards.
Step 5: Change colors and save!
Change any colors you would like or union together or group to have it cut in one image. These are so quick and now since it’s saved on your computer you can sell these as digital downloads!
