Shaker Cake Toppers
These have become super popular over the past few years and can be made with any theme. They can be intimidating at first but once you have built one, you can build it with any theme. Start small and work your way into more layers.
If you want to learn how to make a shaker cake topper in Cricut Design Space you can read all about it for this graduation cake topper. You most definitely can build a shaker cake topper out of ANY shape and all within Cricut Design Space! There are a few steps – really you just need to work with offset, alight, and slice. Once you have those buttons down, you can create any shaker you want! And if you’re like me and don’t want to pay for Cricut Access – then I have a full page of free basic shape SVG files for you to download!
The Breast Cancer Awareness Shaker Cake Topper Template is an easy upload to Cricut Design Space. Let’s go through the layers – for this shaker cake topper you will need:
- Cardstock paper – I am using a combination of 80 pound or 118 gsm and glitter paper from Michaels. But I also love Printworks DIY!
- Glue – I am using Bearly Arts and DINOMAMA saves you 10%
- Acetate – this is a thin clear plastic used in crafting and baking.
- Foam sheets or foam tape – I use these sheets from Michaels and cut them on my maker with the knife blade or rotary blade. However, if you don’t have a Cricut Maker you can also use foam tape rolls instead!
- Confetti or Sequins – anything you want to fill your shaker with! I love the tube confetti from the Dollar Tree.
- A cake stick or paper straw to hold the topper.
Layers in Design Space:
Once you have downloaded the free shaker cake topper SVG file you can upload it into Cricut Design Space and see the layers. The pink layers are all going to be cut out of the cardstock paper of your choice. I used three different pinks including a rose gold pink glitter paper. The white is going to be your foam layer but again, this can only be cut on a Maker (or rather I haven’t attempted this on my Explore Air). The blue layer is your acetate. There is an acetate setting on the Maker but for the explore I use the transparency setting on more pressure and I cut twice!
Once you have everything cut, assembly is just building the layers in the proper order and remembering to fill the shaker before you close it (I know this sounds silly but I almost did it with this shaker!)
Don’t be skimpy with the filling – you want your shaker to shake. If you want more height you can always double the foam layer depending on the thickness of your foam.
If you are using foam tape: you will need to hide or delete the foam layer from Cricut Design Space. Then when you are building you will just make the round shape (or whatever shape you went with) in foam tape. You can double this up too if you want more height!
Remember to check out my graduation cake topper blog post to see how to assemble the topper! I also have a Breast Cancer Ribbon Shaker available to build and a candy cane shaker!
Shaker Cake Toppers are a great stepping stone into creating beautiful paper party decor!
