Materials You’ll Need:
- Cardstock or your preferred paper crafting material
- Craft glue and hot glue gun
- Floral wire (optional, for making stemmed flowers)
- Crayola markers or any brown marker for detailing
- Foam for shaping and ball tools
Step 1: Download and Prepare Your SVG
First, head to my community vault to grab the cosmos flower SVG. Once downloaded, open the file in Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio. This design is quite simple to work with, making it the easiest way to start your paper flower collection. You can resize the flower to your liking—anywhere from 3 to 6 inches works perfectly! Make sure to resize the entire file and base the size of the flower based off the width of the petals.
Step 2: Color the Flower Center
For a more realistic look, start by coloring the center pieces of your cosmos flowers. I used a brown Crayola marker to add a subtle touch of color to the taller center pieces. You don’t need anything fancy here—just a few strokes around the edges to create depth.
Step 3: Roll and Assemble the Flower Center
Next, remove the pieces from your cutting mat and prepare to roll the center. Attach the smaller pieces first, followed by the larger ones. Using a pair of tweezers or a quilling tool, roll the flower center towards itself, keeping the bottom flat. Once rolled, secure it with a bit of craft glue. Ensure the colored part is facing inward so it adds dimension once the flower is fully assembled.
Step 4: Shape the Petals
To create that soft, lifelike look, I used a ball tool to add detail to the petals. By drawing gentle lines from the center to the tip, you’ll give your petals a textured, crepe-like effect. This little touch makes all the difference in achieving a professional finish.
Step 5: Glue the Petals Together
Now it’s time to layer and glue the petals together. I recommend using a hot glue gun for this step, as it ensures a strong bond. Arrange the petals so they’re slightly offset, eliminating gaps between layers. You’ll end up with a stunning 3D flower that’s perfect for wall art, greeting cards, or any other DIY projects.
Step 6: Add a Stem and Leaves (Optional)
For a stemmed cosmos flower, grab some floral wire and create a small loop at the end. Attach this to the calyx (the green part at the base of the flower) and glue it to the center of your flower. Wrap the stem in floral tape, adding leaves as you go. This gives your flower a polished, realistic look that’s great for floral arrangements.
Step 7: Final Touches
With your cosmos flower assembled, you can now enjoy your creation! Whether you’re displaying it in your craft room or using it as part of a larger unique paper craft template, this flower is sure to impress.
