Materials Needed
Affiliate links help support this blog at no extra cost to you. Thanks for using them! Please read my full disclosure here.
Make sure to gather all your necessary materials before getting started:
- Cutting machine (Cricut Maker, Explore, Joy, or Silhouette)
- Cardstock in red, white, blue, and optional glitter
- Glue (hot glue gun + craft glue)
- Paper straws for toppers
- Scoring stylus or wheel (optional but helpful)
- Foam Tape
- String or yarn for hanging the banner
Step 1: Upload and Resize Your SVG Files
Once you’ve downloaded the SVG files (found at the end of this blog post), upload them into Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio. All files are layered and sized to be beginner-friendly, but you can adjust them to fit your front porch, coffee table, or any July party setup.

For cupcake toppers: set the width around 2.75 inches.
For the cake topper: resize to around 6.5 to 7 inches wide.
The banner panels are about 6.5 inches wide each, and the full banner spans around 36 inches.
Step 2: Score or Fold the Fan Pieces

All three decorations use a coquette-inspired fan design as their base. Each white strip includes score lines. If you have a scoring stylus, you can change those cut lines to score in Design Space. Don’t have one? No problem. You can just fold them manually like you did with paper fans in elementary school.

This fan shape adds a touch of elegance and vintage charm to your patriotic decorations. It’s a simple idea that gives a big impact.
Step 3: Assemble the Bows and Fans

To build the fan, fold each strip back and forth (accordion style). You’ll need four pieces per full fan. Fold each in half and glue at the center, then glue the four sections together to form a circle.

Add a top circle using craft glue or hot glue to hold everything in place. This is also a fun way to mix in fabric scraps or glitter paper for texture.

Attach layered stars or decorative centers to finish the look. The bows work well as wall accents or even throw pillows with iron-on vinyl for coordinated decor.
Step 4: Create Your Coquette Patriotic Banner
The banner should have 3 bows and the two rosette fans alternating but you can change this to whatever you would like. Use yarn or twine to assemble the full banner and space your pieces evenly. Add extras like names, holiday greetings, or a patriotic feel phrase using adhesive vinyl.

This banner makes the perfect backdrop for a patriotic party, and you can easily repurpose the fans for DIY centerpieces or other July crafts.
Step 5: Make Cupcake and Cake Toppers

Each cupcake topper is assembled double-sided using layered cardstock and a paper straw. Flatten the straw slightly with your fingers, add hot glue, and sandwich it between the two sides.

The cake topper uses the same fan shape as the others, with layered text reading “Sweet Land of Liberty.” Add foam tape for dimension or use hot glue for quicker assembly.

This set works great for a table setting, centerpiece, or even topping off a flower pot on your front porch.
Customization Tips
These DIY Fourth of July decorations are fully customizable:
- Use patterned paper or blue fabric instead of cardstock
- Replace stars with hearts or florals for a more coastal theme
- Adjust the variety of sizes to match your space or table layout
And don’t forget—you can absolutely adapt this project for Memorial Day or Flag Day by changing the center text.
Why You’ll Love This Project
The best part? These patriotic decorations come together fast, use inexpensive materials, and are beginner-friendly.
You can get everything you need from Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby, or even your thrift stores stash. Repurpose old cardstock scraps, mason jar lids, or leftover ribbon to add character.
Celebrate your love of crafting and American pride without breaking the bank. This is one of my favorite DIY Fourth of July decorations projects yet, and I hope it becomes one of yours too.
