AI SVG: Use ChatGPT to Make Layered Cricut Images

Creating beautiful, high-quality SVG files just got a lot easier, thanks to AI. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to use ChatGPT as an AI SVG generator and convert the result into a fully layered Cricut image. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your cutting projects or explore new AI tools in your craft room, this method is a game-changer for SVG conversion. We’ll go from a simple prompt to a ready-to-cut design using ChatGPT, PNG2SVG.com, and Inkscape.

This guide is designed for intermediate to advanced Cricut users who want to dive deeper into vector art and take full advantage of AI tools for professional-grade vector graphics, without needing expensive software like Adobe Illustrator.

Step 1: Generating an AI Image with ChatGPT

Let’s start by using ChatGPT (I’m using GPT-4o) to create a layered-ready image. If you’re unfamiliar with how to create graphics using ChatGPT, don’t worry, just focus on writing clear prompts.

A text prompt in ChatGPT that reads “a cute ghost holding a book. max 5 colors. do not mix colors. keep them all solid. pastels only.” displayed in the “What are you working on?” input field.

Here’s the prompt I used for this project:

“A cute ghost holding a book. Max 5 colors. Do not mix colors. Keep them all solid. Pastels only.”

This kind of simple text prompt helps avoid gradients, shadows, and complex textures that don’t convert well to SVG graphics. The goal is to produce clean vector illustrations from the start.

Once your image is generated, download it as a PNG. We’ll be using this PNG to move into the SVG conversion step.

Step 2: Converting PNG to SVG

Next, we’ll use a free SVG converter to turn our AI-generated image into a cuttable file. I used PNG2SVG.com for this step. It’s quick and easy, but there’s a catch: these converters can sometimes muddy the image layers.

A screenshot of the PNG2SVG.com interface showing the ghost image uploaded and converted into an SVG file, ready for download.

That’s why I recommend this two-part method: convert with a basic SVG tool, then clean and layer your vector file with Inkscape. This keeps your project in true scalable vector graphics format and ensures high-quality SVG images for Cricut Design Space. Once it’s run through the converter you can download the SVG.

Now it’s time to clean it up.

Step 3: Cleaning Your SVG in Inkscape

Inkscape is a free design tool perfect for refining AI art into professional vector graphics. If you’re new to it, I suggest starting with my Inkscape beginner tutorials. This particular method is a little more advanced, but still very doable with step-by-step guidance.

The converted SVG ghost image opened in Inkscape with visible nodes selected, showing areas needing cleanup and layer separation.

Here’s what we’ll be doing in Inkscape:

  1. Open the SVG file
  2. Ungroup layers and remove any unnecessary backgrounds images
  3. Create a clean offset layer for your background (optional depending on the image)
  4. Use Path > Outset to thicken outlines
  5. Combine and union shapes for solid color groupings
  6. Adjust color layers and vector icons as needed

This approach ensures each color becomes a separate layer, perfect for scalable graphics and various applications like vinyl decals, paper crafts, or commercial purposes.

The result? A crisp, clean SVG with defined cut lines, perfectly suited for Cricut or Silhouette machines.

Step 4: Recreate in Cricut Design Space

While Inkscape gives you more control, you can also convert and layer within Cricut Design Space. Just upload your original PNG or SVG file, then use:

The original pastel ghost image uploaded into Cricut Design Space with its layers shown in the right-side panel.
  • Contour to hide unwanted cuts
  • Offset to build shadows or outlines
  • Slice and subtract to create clean layers
  • Weld for combining elements like eyes, mouths, or shapes

Keep in mind that Cricut’s tools may struggle with certain AI-generated SVGs, especially if the image wasn’t created with layers in mind. That’s why I strongly prefer the user-friendly interface and precision of Inkscape.

Tips for Best Results

To ensure clean vector image generation, here are some extra tips:

  • Use bold, non-blended colors in your ChatGPT prompts
  • Avoid gradients or raster images, they don’t convert well
  • Choose reference images that are flat and simple
  • Use tools like Outset, Union, and Break Apart for full layer control
  • Always convert your shapes to paths: Path > Object to Path

The beauty of this design process is that it gives you full customization over different elements, allowing for unique SVG creations every time.

Why Use ChatGPT for SVGs?

Using ChatGPT as an AI vector generator brings serious creative power to your craft space. Not only can you request images in specific styles, themes, and color palettes, but you can also streamline the creative process with just a few user inputs.

It’s also one of the most user-friendly platforms for beginners looking to create high-quality vector graphics without needing to draw or design from scratch.

The ability to generate layered SVGs from prompts is ideal for:

  • Professional use (T-shirts, decals, digital downloads)
  • Hobbyists looking to expand their SVG files collection
  • Craft businesses needing unique, on-brand vector file assets

With AI-driven solutions, you can generate cohesive icon sets, themed geometric shapes, and different designs in just minutes.
